Bernard Matthews has died at the age of 80. Here are 10 facts you might not know about the man who must count as Britain's most famous farmer.

* In 1953 he married wife Joyce, but the couple only took a single day honeymoon because they had to feed their turkeys. The same year storms almost destroyed their sheds and their business.

* In 1965 he met Nikita Khrushchev, Soviet leader, to discuss the modernisation of the Russian poultry industry.

* In 1968 he entered the Guinness Book of World Records after becoming the biggest turkey farmer in Europe.

* In the late 1960s he presented a Christmas turkey to Harold Wilson and his wife on the steps of No 10. This was later repeated for Margaret Thatcher, who insisted on paying him for it, as well as the Majors and the Blairs.

* In 1980 he launched his first television commercial. The "Bootiful" slogan which became the company's trademark was dreamed up by Mr Matthews himself. Advertising agency Ogilvy & Mather proposed "the only tough bird around here is me”, but he rejected the tagline because it put the idea of tough meat in the consumer's mind.

* In 1989 he received the Queen’s Service Medal for services to the New Zealand meat Industry.

* In 1992 he entered the cooked meats market with products including Turkey Breast slices, Chicken Slices and Wafer Thin Turkey Ham.

* In 1995 he expanded into the fresh breaded market with Lemon & Pepper Turkey.

* In 2008 the Bernard Matthews brand was relaunched as Bernard Matthews Farms to “reconnect” the brand with its farming origins.

* In 2010 Marco Pierre White, Michelin star chef, began work with Bernard Matthews and became an ambassador for turkey.
