Good morning, dear teachers and fellow students!
Today, my speech is titled “Frost’s Descent — Autumn’s Last Farewell.”
Do you know that ancient Chinese people divided a year into 24 solar terms to observe the weather and plan their farming? Frost’s Descent is the 18th of these solar terms, and the last solar term of autumn. It usually falls around October 23 every year. The ancient Chinese named it simply — Frost’s Descent, meaning frost falls from the sky.
When Frost’s Descent arrives, the early-morning world changes quietly. A thin, white layer of frost appears on the grass, on the rooftops and even on car windows. When we breathe out, we can see little clouds of white air. The morning feels clear and cool. The ancient Chinese described this season with three phrases: jackals hunt their prey, plants turn yellow and leaves fall, and insects hide and get ready for a long sleep. Look — nature is quietly preparing for winter.
Frost’s Descent is also a time of harvest and delicious food. There is an old saying: “Vegetables touched by frost taste sweeter.” After a cold night, cabbages and radishes become sweeter and more delicious. Why? Because the cold night turns the starch inside them into sugar. It is a gift from nature. People also say: “Eat persimmons on Frost’s Descent, and you won’t catch a cold easily.” Bright red persimmons taste sweet. And in the parks, chrysanthemums bloom bravely in the cold. Their beauty is so stunning that people can’t take their eyes away.
Frost’s Descent is like a farewell letter from autumn. It tells us: autumn is leaving, and winter is coming. As the poet Liu Yuxi wrote, “Clear hills and waters meet night frost; trees show deep red and pale yellow across the land.” Even the end of autumn can be breathtakingly beautiful.
As students, we should learn from nature. When the weather turns colder, we should put on warm clothes, drink more warm water, go to bed early and get up early, and keep exercising, so that we can greet every season with healthy, strong bodies. At the same time, we can observe the changes around us just like the ancients did — watch the leaves turn yellow, watch the frost form, watch the persimmons turn red. We can write these observations down. Observation is the best way to learn.
Frost’s Descent is not an ending. It gives life the strength to move bravely toward winter. Just as a seed must pass through the cold winter before it can sprout in spring, we too should store up our strength on cold days, and wait for our own spring.
Thank you all!
