From high-flying lawyers to expert bean-counters, recruiter Hays predicts the jobs and skills that will be in demand this year.

IT developer

There continues to be a shortage of skilled IT professionals in the UK, particularly those specialising in Java, Net and business intelligence technologies. IT developers can earn £300 per day on a contract, or about £40,000 a year.

Chief finance officer

Finance departments are faring well in the current climate as organisations seek to become more efficient and cut costs following the downturn. Chief finance officers, and finance directors who can support strategies to drive business growth are in demand, as are those with professional accounting qualifications. A group finance director can expect to earn £120,000 minimum.

City risk specialist

There is a demand for permanent and interim candidates who have worked in the City with financial markets. The banks are looking for revenue generators who are client-facing, with a strong banking background and appropriate levels of managing risk and control. Professionals with experience in compliance and risk are sought after by the banks, following the economic crisis and increased regulation from the FSA. Operational risk specialists with 3-6 years' experience can earn up to £65,000.

Energy engineer

The power sector is crying out for skilled engineers and for those experienced in environmental impact assessment and low carbon emissions. Skills shortages exist in both manufacturing, project design and management. These people are mobile and highly valued around the world, not just in the UK, so we are competing internationally for skills in mechanical engineering, structural engineering and project management. Green jobs are starting to take off, due to binding agreements to reduce carbon emissions by 2020.

HR manager

As people issues rise to the fore, many organisations rely on their HR teams to provide advice over employee relations, complex TUPE regulations, restructuring and change management. We expect private sector opportunities to increase in manufacturing, banking, financial services, energy and retail. An experienced HR manager can earn between £30,000 and £60,000.

Lawyer

Across financial services, we expect demand to continue for specialist ISDA, capital markets, investment management and funds lawyers. There is also renewed interest in lawyers with employment, corporate, banking and IT experience. In practice, demand exists in the areas of financial regulation, insolvency and across all aspects of finance. A qualified lawyer can earn about £75,000 based in London.

Headteacher

Whilst schools have had to make cutbacks following the Government's Spending Review, there will always be a demand for teachers. Michael Gove’s recommendations have highlighted the need for a different set of leadership skills so the challenge for schools is to make sure that they have leaders with the right skills to get them through such challenging times. There is a real demand for headteachers who can demonstrate the ability to manage teams effectively, show strong financial awareness and innovation. Headteachers in primary schools can earn about £60,000, while those in secondary schools can pick up about £95,000.

Medical liaison officer

The pharmaceutical industry, in particular regulatory affairs, health economics and statistical programming, is faring well due to the increased requirement for safety measures. The renewed focus on fair pricing and government regulation has forced companies to look more closely at their pricing, which has driven recruitment in health economics and market access. Many drug companies are launching new products, which calls for an increasing number of medical liaison personnel who can also forge stronger links with key opinion leaders in industry. A medical liaison officer can earn £50,000.

Part-qualified accountant

The lack of graduates undertaking accounting training in previous years has resulted in continuous demand for top performers. There is a large requirement for professionals with two to three years’ post-graduate or practical experience who are actively studying towards an accountancy qualification such as an Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) or Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) certificate. Part-qualified accountants generally earn about £30,000.

Personal injury - technical claims officer

We expect the insurance market to continue picking up next year, with opportunities focused on maintaining and generating revenue. For example, technical claims staff are in demand to maintain revenue streams, while business development staff are increasingly sought after to drive new business. There is a high demand for actuaries with Solvency II experience, underwriters and brokers across the UK. A mid-level personal injury claims officer can earn up to £50,000.
