Geili is from a northern China dialect and means interesting or attractive. After it was used in the Japanese television animation series A Good Day For Gag Manga, geili became popular with Internet users in China. In the television show, when Sun Wukong, the Monkey King, arrived in India, he was so disappointed that he said to his master, the Tang Monk: "Is this what India is like? Not geili at all."
Today geili has a slightly different meaning. People use geili to describe someone or something impressive or face-saving. It has elements of surprise and grandeur as when an ordinary person does something extraordinary. Passionate web users have coined an English version for their foreign friends - geilivable (or gelivable), and the antonym, ungeilivable (or ungelivable).
