Step 1 Lead-in
1. Show students pictures and play a guessing game to ask about different people’s occupations:
(1) What is he/she?
(2) What are they?
(3) What does he /she do?
(4) What is his /her job?
2. Give a conclusion of how to ask the occupations:
(1) What’s your job?
(2) What are you?
(3) What do you do?
Step 2 Vocabulary
1. Finish Part A on P30 and check the answers.
2. Finish Part B on P30 and check the answers.
3. Learn some vocabularies of the occupations and the related places: waiter, cook, teacher, student, doctor, nurse, shopper cashier, restaurant, school, hospital, and supermarket.
Step 3 Oral practice
1. Brain storm : Show more pictures and ask students to talk about the occupations and places, and then learn more new words:
(1) T: What is he? S: He’s a farmer on the farm.
(2) T: What is she? S: She’s a teacher in the school.
T: What are they? S: They are students in the school.
(3) T: What’s her job? S: She’s a cashier / shopper / customer in the supermarket.
(4) T: What is his job? S: He’s a postman in the post office.
(5) T: What is his job? S: He’s an engineer / a worker in the factory.
(6) T: What does she do? S: She’s a nurse in the hospital.
T: What does he do? S: He’s a doctor / patient in the hospital.
(7) T: What does she do? S: She’s a waitress in the restaurant.
T: What does he do? S: He’s a waiter / cooker in the restaurant.
2. Pair work: Ask students to talk about more jobs and workplaces with their desk-mates: farmer, farm; driver, bus/truck; policeman, police station; postman, post office; accountant, bank/company; engineer, factory ; worker , factory.
3. Discussion: What do you want to be when you grow up and why?
Step 4 Practice
Fill in the blanks with the words of jobs and places we’ve learned in this lesson.
